We are as happy as a pig in poop here at Leahy’s Open Farm. We love to hang around, sleep and eat.
We snort a lot and we can be a bit smelly. We can’t run very fast, but we have very good hearing. Pigs are intelligent animals. A pig’s snout is an important tool for finding food in the ground and sensing the world around them. Pigs have an excellent sense of smell. Humans farm pigs for meat such as pork, bacon and ham.
At the farm we have three kunekune pigs. Our three pigs are called Will I Ham, Kevin Bacon and Harry trotter.
Kunekune are the smallest breed of pigs. To help protect their skin from sunburn, pigs use mud as a form of sunscreen. They roll in the mud and when the mud dries on their skin, it forms a barrier against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.
During the summer months at the farm everyday at 2pm our pigs run a race with help from a visitor to the farm. This is a very fun event with lots of laughs and giggles for both young and old.
